Across the nation, SSDI backlog leaves injured and sick stranded

As regular readers of our LaCrosse blog know, Social Security Disability payments are a crucial part of our social "safety net." These payments, which help people who are too injured or ill to work, keep millions of American afloat.

Unfortunately, the agency that processes Social Security Disability payments is so overworked and understaffed that applications are badly backlogged and people who certainly seem to have qualifying injuries and illnesses are not getting the information they need. In some cases, their claims are being denied and the applicants feel they are not getting a thorough-enough explanation as to why.

One woman recently told a reporter that she had to stop working recently because her breast cancer had spread to other parts of her body. Due to her illness and the necessary treatments, she simply could not work. She said she thought Social Security Disability would take care of her, but her claim was denied for no apparent reason. She said she finds herself unable to pay bills and wondering where to turn to next.

In some cases, having a professional who understands the very complex Social Security Disability system on your side can help. Lawyers who work with people seeking Social Security Disability are not miracle workers, and success is never guaranteed. That being said, in many cases, they are able to provide great help and can assist their clients in reaching a satisfactory outcome.
